Mercy Health Center of Lake offers low-cost blood screenings the third Friday of each month. Held from 7 am to 11 am, cost is $2 for total cholesterol, $2 for Glucose (blood sugar), and $8 for a complete lipid profile. No appointment is necessary and walk-ins are welcome. Mercy Medical Center of Carroll County will offer low-cost blood screenings on Friday, March 26, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. The facility, located at 125 Canton Rd., Carrollton, will be offering total cholesterol screening for $2, glucose screening (blood sugar) for $2, and lipid profiles (total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL and LDL) for $8.

A used cell phone drive has been organized to benefit Robbie, a Canal Fulton man with ALS disease. Proceeds will go to assist with costs of a trip to China for treatment.
Used cell phones can be dropped off through May 29 at Cut and Curl Corner, at 2170 Locust St. in Canal Fulton, next to FirstMerit Bank and across the street from Dairy Queen. Salon hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

This exhibit concentrates on the extremely important, but nonpolitical role that First Ladies play in international diplomatic relationships for our country. This exhibit will feature First Ladies Elizabeth Monroe, Harriet Lane, Helen Taft, Lou Hoover, Jackie Kennedy, Pat Nixon, Rosalynn Carter and Hillary Clinton. On display will be gifts given to First Ladies from various countries around the world on loan from Presidential Libraries and Museums.

“The Unguarded Moment,” a retrospective exhibit of 50 photos by Steve McCurry, is on view from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays Feb. 6 through April 2 at the Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography, at 520 Cleveland Ave. NW in downtown Canton.

McCurry is the photographer who took what has been called the most recognizable photograph in the world today — the green-eyed “Afghan Girl” on the cover of National Geographic in 1984.

The Amish Door Village opens its 2010 entertainment season with the romantic comedy “My Name is Ruth,” performed Jan. 29 and 30 and March 25, 26 and 27, following a home-cooked Amish meal. Special weekday matinees will be performed Jan. 29 and March 26. Evening seating begins at 6:15 p.m. and matinee seating at 12:15 p.m.

The Massillon Recreation Center is offering weekly open gyms for home school students, grades K-12, on Fridays, 1-3 pm, through May 21. These instructor-led open gyms will teach children sport skills and fitness fundamentals in a fun atmosphere. Each class will begin with a half to one mile run followed by a different sports and fitness theme each week. Participants can come as often or as little as they choose. Parents can participate in the activities or pay the same fees and workout on their own. Cost is $3 for members and $4 for non-members. No pre-registration is necessary.

St. George Romanian Orthodox Church invites you to our returning Fish Fries and Chicken Dinners resuming Friday, February 12 and every Friday during Lent. The City of Massillon Parks and Recreation Department is hosting two youth basketball programs on Friday evenings, March 5-April 9 at the Massillon Recreation Center. Little Hoop Stars will be 5:30-6:30 pm and Hoop Stars will be 6:30-7:30 pm. Little Hoop Stars is designed to teach ages 4-6 the basics of dribbling, passing, shooting, positioning, defense and rebounding in a fun-oriented atmosphere. Hoop Stars will teach 1st and 2nd graders more of the basketball basics and includes low-competition games so players can learn to apply their skills in a game format.

The Washington High School Distinguished Citizens Banquet will be held on Friday, March 26, 2010, beginning at 5:45 p.m. at the St. George Cultural Center, 364 First St., S.E., Massillon, Ohio. A Gospel Music Workshop facilitated by Rev. Ken Anderson from San Diego, CA will be held Thursday, March 25 – Saturday, March 27 at Dewald Chapel on Mount Union’s campus, at 1972 Clark Ave. in Alliance.

Presented by the Inspirational Voices of Praise (IVOP) of Mount Union College, the workshop will allow time to share musical literature and extend an opportunity to congregations that wish to add a diversity component to their music program(s).

The Courtyard by Marriott of Belden Village will host a March Madness “tailgate party” fundraiser for one of its front-office supervisors, Brad Martin, who was critically injured in a car accident.
Martin has been hospitalized since Dec. 11. He came out of a coma a month ago and can move his limbs and breathe on his own, but cannot yet speak. The fundraiser is to assist with his enormous medical bills.
The fundraiser will be from 6 p.m. to midnight March 26 at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel at 4375 Metro Cir. NW in Jackson Township.
